Recovery of an unconscious man overboard at the side on low freeboard boats

Drill on board Pride of Clide.

This operation was done by one crew member, in 2 minutes, from the start of preparation until the person was safely on board the vessel.

Equipment: MS.00 Markusnet, light boom with treble block hoist and a boathook.

Method: The MOB pulled to the boat with a boat hook. The net thread under the MOB by holding to the hoisting strap and lowering the net at the head end of the casualty and pull the throw-line or the driftanchor line between the legs until the float wire on the outer edge of the net can be seen between the legs. Hold the float wire there with the line or a boat hook and pull the hoisting strap until the MOB sits secured in the net structure. Then link the hoisting strap to a treble block hoist and hoist it on board.

In rough sea, an in-water rescue of an unconsciouse MOB casualty is recommended, to secure the rescue operation and avoid danger from the boat.

Security advice: Make sure you have secure way back on board and are linked to the boat and have mean to secure the casualty in, before you enter the water to rescue helpless person in water.
